A Jazz History: Origins to Art Form

Jazz is a quintessentially American art form – a “melting pot” of musical styles drawing on both African and European traditions, infused with an element of improvisation and rhythmic vitality, that emerged in the city of New Orleans in the early 20th century. In this special two-night course, Dr. Robert Larson, Director of Jazz Studies at Shenandoah Conservatory, traces the development of jazz from its earliest influences personified by Louis Armstrong, through the dynamic compositions of Duke Ellington, the big band swing bands, into the modernist strains of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and beyond. Part one of a two-night event.

Animals on the Go: How Scientists Understand Animal Movement and Its Implications

Join guest speaker Dr. Justin Calabrese from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute for glimpse into the wild world of animal movement research. From jaguars stalking prey in the Amazon to the acrobatics of backyard bird flocks, movement is a key factor in how animals interact with each other, their environments, and with humans. Dr. Calabrese will highlight the process of how scientists learn about movement, from capturing animals and fitting them with GPS devices to analyzing the tracking data, to making decisions based on the results.
